Day 1: Setting Sail from Marmaris
As the summer sun bathed the Marmaris marina in golden light, we stepped aboard our catamaran, our home for the next six days. The boat’s sleek design, spacious cabins, and inviting deck set the tone for a luxurious adventure along Turkey’s Turquoise Coast. After a quick briefing and provisioning, we set sail, leaving the lively marina behind.
Our first destination was Cennet Island (Paradise Island), just a short sail from Marmaris. The calm waters and lush surroundings made it a perfect spot to anchor. We swam, snorkeled, and enjoyed a sunset dinner onboard, featuring fresh local produce and seafood. The peaceful cove and gentle rocking of the boat made for a dreamy first night.
Day 2: Exploring Çiftlik Bay and Marmaris National Park
The morning began with a leisurely breakfast on deck, accompanied by the soothing sound of waves. A gentle breeze carried us to Çiftlik Bay, a hidden gem known for its crystal-clear waters and sandy beach. En route, we spotted sea turtles gliding gracefully through the water—a highlight for the kids.
Before reaching Çiftlik Bay, we sailed along the fringes of Marmaris National Park, a protected area known for its lush pine forests and diverse wildlife. The park’s dramatic cliffs and coves offered stunning vistas and a sense of serenity. We even paused to take a short hike through one of the park’s trails, immersing ourselves in its natural beauty.
Once anchored at Çiftlik Bay, we took the dinghy ashore to explore the charming village and its family-run restaurants. Back on the boat, the afternoon was spent paddleboarding and kayaking. Dinner was a feast at a waterfront taverna, where the kids sampled Turkish flatbreads and fresh fish grilled to perfection.
Day 3: Serene Bozukkale
Day three brought us to Bozukkale, a bay steeped in history. The ancient ruins of Loryma—a Hellenistic fortress—overlooked the bay, creating a dramatic backdrop. After a morning swim, we hiked up to the ruins, where the panoramic views of the Aegean left us in awe.
Bozukkale is part of a broader protected area that preserves its unique ecological and historical significance. The untouched natural surroundings made this stop feel like a journey back in time. Returning to the boat, we enjoyed a relaxing afternoon of sunbathing and snorkeling. The underwater world here was vibrant, with schools of colorful fish darting through coral. As the sun set, we dined at a rustic seaside restaurant, enjoying meze and freshly caught seafood under a starlit sky.
Day 4: The Vibrant Charm of Datça and Gulf of Gökova
Datça Peninsula was our next stop, a place where the Aegean and Mediterranean seas meet. The sail was smooth, with a refreshing breeze and dazzling views of rugged coastline. We docked at Datça town, a lively spot with cobblestone streets, bougainvillea-draped houses, and a bustling market.
En route, we passed through the Gulf of Gökova, known for its pristine waters and secluded beaches. This area is part of a marine protected region that showcases Turkey’s commitment to preserving its natural beauty. We paused at one of its many coves for a refreshing swim before continuing our journey.
In Datça, we spent the afternoon exploring the town, picking up local honey and olive oil as souvenirs. A visit to the ancient city of Knidos, a short taxi ride away, offered a fascinating glimpse into Turkey’s rich history. Back on the catamaran, we anchored in a quiet bay and enjoyed a peaceful evening, with the kids stargazing from the trampoline at the bow.
Day 5: Crystal Waters of Şövalye Island and Butterfly Valley
The penultimate day took us to Şövalye Island, a tranquil haven just off the coast of Fethiye. The journey was a mix of sailing and motor cruising, with plenty of opportunities to relax and enjoy the stunning scenery. The kids were thrilled to spot dolphins playing in our wake.
Anchoring near the island, we spent the day swimming and snorkeling in the warm, crystal-clear waters. The underwater ruins of an ancient harbor made for an exciting discovery during our snorkeling adventures.
Later in the afternoon, we sailed past Butterfly Valley, a breathtaking national park accessible only by boat or hiking. Its dramatic cliffs and cascading waterfalls were mesmerizing. Though we couldn’t stop for long, the sight of butterflies fluttering in the sunlit gorge was unforgettable.
A final dinner onboard, featuring Turkish delights and freshly baked bread, was a fitting way to savor our last evening at sea.
Day 6: The Grand Finale in Fethiye and Saklikent National Park
Our journey concluded in Fethiye, a vibrant town nestled at the base of forested mountains. Arriving mid-morning, we docked at the marina and set out to explore the town. The bustling market, with its spices, textiles, and handmade crafts, was a sensory delight. The kids were captivated by the ancient Lycian rock tombs carved into the cliffs overlooking the town.
A celebratory lunch at a waterfront restaurant featured meze platters, kebabs, and the freshest seafood. In the afternoon, we visited Ölüdeniz, a nearby lagoon known for its turquoise waters and paragliders soaring overhead.
For an adventurous finale, we took a short drive to Saklikent National Park, home to one of the deepest canyons in Turkey. Walking through the cool, narrow gorge, surrounded by towering rock walls, was an exhilarating experience. The kids loved wading in the icy waters and spotting wildlife along the trail.
Returning to the catamaran for one last sunset, we reminisced about the incredible journey and the memories we’d created together.
